(2000 Census); 43,766 (2005 est) Cities & Towns: Shelbyville (17,951) is the county's largest city and the county seat of government. Other cities include Fairland (1,276) and Morristown (1,133). Named For: General Isaac Shelby who defeated the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain in the Revolutionary War. Shelby then became the first Governor of Kentucky. During the War of 1812, he led the army of Kentucky into Canada, and defeated the British at the decisive Battle of the Thames in 1813.
